Jessie Schiewe
Professional storyteller
Jessie Schiewe (pronounced “shee-wee”) is an award-winning journalist for newspapers, websites and alternative-weeklies. She has spent the bulk of her career writing about people, places and events in the cities she’s lived in.
She is a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times’ features section and her articles frequently appear in print and on the front page in Column One.
Jessie got her start in news writing as an editorial intern for The Los Angeles Times less than a month after graduating from Wesleyan University where she double majored in English and Political Science. She then relocated to Oahu, HI, where she worked as a staff writer for The Honolulu Weekly.
After receiving a Masters in Journalism from UC Berkeley, Jessie served as an editor for SF Weekly, covering the music section and running the publication’s monthly marijuana magazine. For years, she wrote radio content for DJs nationwide via Reel World Media / Futuri Media Inc. and was a frequent contributor to alternative weekly newspapers including LA Weekly, OC Weekly, The New York Observer and Miami New Times.
In 2018, Jessie launched OK Whatever, a weird news website. In its fourth year, OK Whatever won the 2021 Webby Award for Best Culture Website on the Internet.
In addition to writing news and non-fiction, Jessie also pens ad copy, advertorials and marketing content for retail companies.
She enjoys writing about anything weird or bizarre. She also (really) loves chihuahuas.
